COMPLEMENTARY ACTIVITY 1: THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

-What's your opinion about the PE approaches that are being shown in the video?

The video shows PE projects developed taking into account everything and everyone. It works with gender, recycle, ways of learning and having fun through different materials, own constructions..., the need to move and the healthy lifestyle. In my opinion, the approaches that are made are very important to work on different aspects in the subject. I think we have to leave aside the idea that we run and play games in physical eduaction and that we have to introduce new methodologies and topics that motivate students and make them feel integrated. As we are trying to change the society we have to change those things that were not working correctly and introduce new things that help students develop them and their abilities (physical, mental and psychological).

-From your point of view, why do you think it is so important to work in PE?

As I said before, PE needed a change because we are trying to change society. We have to change the feeling that some students have towards it, it is not only a thing of being good at sports or who runs faster. We have to use the subject to extract the maximum benefit from everything we can work from it, learn about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, know that we can learn a lot of things from it not only related to physical activity, use it as a way to treat emotions and psychological aspects, know how our body and mind works... I also think that, although we can do it in every subject, PE is a very good moment to make people feel comfortable with themselves, with others and learn to respect everyone and every condition.

-What are your experiences in PE? (positive/negative, put examples)

I didn't really enjoy physical education at school because there was always the need for someone to be the best at what we were working on, I think we need to work on feelings of belonging, self-esteem and the reality that we are all different. Also, for gender reasons, the girls were treated always differently and were not allowed by the others to participate in some activities. Although I have a bad memory of it, I think it is very powerful to teach about emotions and its regulation.

COMPLEMENTARY ACTIVITY 2: PINK OR BLUE

How do you see this video reflected in PE today?

This video reflects how society is working nowadays, the roles and attributions that are given to a person depending on the gender she/he has been assigned.

It is directly related to every aspect of our life, thus including PE. Things related to this topic are completely segregated between gender. Sometimes, unconsciously, we act considering the differences created by the society.  It is very important to avoid any kind of reference relating gender-PE when teaching in order to keep away from constructing stereotypes about how we have to act or what do we have to like. Sports or activities are not for boys or for girls, and if we, for instance, relate ballet with girls, we are sending a message to boys: this sport is not for you, you cannot practice it, you can't even like it.

We have to consider individual capacities and not gender capacities to give people the opportunity to decide what they like, what they want to do and which are their strengths and weaknesses.
